My final project as an intern at Bearing Distributors Inc. (BDI) involved the planning of a multi-day sales blitz targeted at new and existing distribution center customers.
Problem
With many new distribution centers coming to the DFW metroplex, BDI set an initiative to capitalize on the new opportunities through a targeted sales campaign. I was allowed to control the schedule of the branch's outside sales team (6 salesmen) over the course of two workdays. I was tasked with breaking the team into subgroups, identifying distribution centers with high potential value, and splitting the distribution centers into reasonable regions for the subgroups to cover during the event.
Approach and Solution
Using Google and BDI records, I formed a list of prospective distribution centers to visit. I used Google Maps' satellite imagery to identify the type of distribution centers at each address and only retained the locations that were most likely to need products from the BDI catalog. Then, I split the list of distribution centers to be visited into Eastern and Western regions and assigned a team of 3 salesmen to both regions. Salesmen assignments were made based on familiarity with the region, previous experience with other centers in the same company, and individual salesman strengths and weaknesses. I made the routings around each region using Google Maps. Finally, I informed the two teams of their assignments, gave them their routes, and prepared promotional materials for the teams to use while meeting with the leadership of the distribution centers.
Results
The teams were able to meet with representatives of almost all expected distribution centers, resulting in opportunities to quote more than $50,000 of products. Distribution centers have continued to become an increasingly important part of BDI's business model, with some relationships started during the sales blitz continuing to this day.
